Environmental allergies, also called allergic rhinitis or hay fever, happen when something in the air causes the immune system to overreact. This could be pollen, dust, pet dander, mold, grass and more. 

A child with allergic rhinitis can have a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy nose or throat, or red, itchy and watery eyes. Environmental allergies can be seasonal or happen year-round. The condition can also be chronic, or ongoing.
