Under-Represented in Medicine Visiting Rotation Program
Our vision at ¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ· is to create the healthiest generations of children. We will accomplish this by going well beyond medicine to improve the world in which every child lives. Part of that commitment is helping build the culturally competent, diverse, health care workforce necessary to improve outcomes and health equity.
¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ· Under-Represented in Medicine Visiting Rotation Program invites fourth-year students from an accredited U.S. or Puerto Rican medical school with diverse backgrounds or underrepresented in medicine to apply. ¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ· offers a competitive stipend to offset travel and accommodations. Applicants must be in good academic standing and the deadline for application is May 15.
We define underrepresented in medicine as any racial, ethnic, religious, socioeconomic, or ability status group whose numbers in medicine are not reflective of that group’s population of the United States. Rotation options include Hospital Medicine, Social Determinants of Health, Gastroenterology (GI), Hematology/ Oncology (Heme/Onc), Emergency Medicine (ED), Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU), Infectious Disease and Pulmonology. Rotations can be scheduled from July 1 to October 31.
Visiting students are fully integrated into clinical and educational opportunities, including opportunities to meet with program leadership, faculty, and residents for mentoring and discussion of career interests. Visiting students who complete all of the rotation requirements are guaranteed an interview with ¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·.
Additional Experiences
Attendance at all resident didactics, diversity focused topic discussion sessions, House Staff and a Faculty Mentor, attendance at organizational level diversity, equity, and inclusion meetings, networking and more.
¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ· Commitment to Diversity
¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ· is committed to the health and well-being of all children, families and our associates. Because racism is detrimental to the health of children and families, and does not align with our mission, ¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ· created the Diversity, Anti-Racism, Inclusion, Value and Health Equity (D.R.I.V.E.) Task Force and has made the following declaration:
¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ· is an Anti-Racism Organization.
We define being an anti-racism organization as creating an environment where all children, families and associates, regardless of race or the color of their skin, know they are valued. We challenge ourselves to identify, discuss, understand and address racism and its impact on children’s health, and to correct systemic racism and any resulting inequities within ¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·. We are committed to combatting racial disparities in the United States through all of the many factors that impact the health of children. This includes working to achieve equitable health outcomes for all children, regardless of race, by addressing the social determinants of health and providing equitable opportunities including but not limited to medical care.
