A Randomized Clinical Trial of Overminus Spectacle Therapy for Intermittent Exotropia (IXT5)

What is the trial about?

Intermittent exotropia is the medical term used when an eye drifts out some of the time and at other times both eyes are straight. The purpose of this study is to determine if special lenses called overminus glasses will help the eye drift out less frequently.

Who can participate?

  • Age: 3–10 years old
  • Have intermittent exotropia that has not been treated in the past (one) month
  • Have not worn overminus glasses in the past six months
  • Have never had eye muscle surgery

What is involved?

Your child will be treated either with overminus glasses or with no treatment other than regular glasses.

Length of study: 18 months

  • Five study visits: enrollment, six months, 12 months, 15 months and 18 months
  • Short "symptom" survey at each visit
  • Questionnaire for child and parent at each visit
  • Multiple eye exams: one (maybe two) examinations will include dilating the eyes
