Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG)

A voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) is an X-ray exam that uses a small amount of radiation to make images of your child’s urinary system to check for problems. It looks at things like the size and shape of the bladder and makes sure the pathway is clear for urine (pee). It’s usually done while the bladder is being emptied.

Conditions That May Require VCUG Test

  • difficulty peeing or infrequent urination (not peeing often enough)
  • overactive bladder (peeing too often)
  • urinary tract infections (when they happen more than once)
  • vesicoureteral reflux or VUR (a condition a child is born with when the pee flows backward from the bladder to the ureters — the thin, tube-like structures that carry pee from the kidney to the bladder)
